When the opportunity presented itself to volunteer both my time and my knowledge it seemed impossible to say no. While I have to admit to being rather shy, and feeling concerned about putting myself in a position where not only would others be listening to my words but relying upon them. Despite these worries, I was enthusiastic about the opportunity to share my passions with other young people.

Volunteering did come with a unique set of challenges, and helped me develop an even greater respect for the teachers that helped me to get where I am today. Building relationships with the 23 pupils I taught became a priority as I worked to balance engagement with encouragement and challenge with intrigue. We became a goal oriented class which made the classroom an enjoyable place for many. Successful students were able to share their progress with their parents, making the students feel both accomplished and proud of their achieve-ments.

I particularly recall my excitement when the pupils chose to seek me out in their break times and before school even began. This helped me realise that my work was having an impact and also that despite my initial shyness, the students were looking forward to the classes. I was further inspired by the students' enthusiasm and rapid progress. I finished my time there by organising a chess competition to celebrate their hard work, application and learning.

My experience in this beautiful town has expanded my thinking and my appreciation for the opportunities that volunteering has afforded me. It also helped me to broaden my perspective on the importance of education. It has also allowed me to meet other young people, keen to develop themselves further and take any opportunities to give back to the communities we are a part of.

I hope to spend more of my time in the future continuing to explore the opportunities afforded to me so that I am able to continue personally challenging myself. Ensuring personal growth and giving back to the society that I am so lucky to be a part of.
