Songs of the Sea: Cetacean and Terrestrial Ecology Conservation in Mauritius

Project Profile

Boarding the ecological ark in the Indian Ocean — Mauritius. Documenting the endangered island species through the camera lens.

Mauritius, an island that witnessed the tragedy of the dodo’s extinction, yet gave rise to one of the world’s greatest conservation miracles. Volunteers will join ecologists deep in primary forests to monitor and protect critically endangered birds such as the Mauritius kestrel and the pink pigeon. Volunteers will systematically learn the principles of island species surveying and habitat restoration, and venture into marine protected areas to observe seasonal whale behavior and encounters with spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. Through this immersive experience, they will come to understand the fragility of island ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation action. Tasked with producing a documentary, volunteers will use the power of visual storytelling to convey a narrative of extinction and rebirth, showcasing the possibilities of human–nature coexistence and sharing the ecological inspiration of this “island of hope” with the world.

"Volunteering + Research", exclusively designed by ASDAN China, is an academic growth model that combines research-oriented learning and voluntary service. We refer to the authoritative theory of education, admission requirements of universities, 10 years of project experience, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to design our programs. ASDAN "Volunteering + Research" Programs cover four categories: Teach for Rural Areas, Community Support, Wildlife & Environment Conservation, and Cultural Heritage Conservation. Volunteers will experience rich and unique service scenarios and learn from different topics of research workshops concerning real social problems. We aim to guide volunteers to discover problems, propose solutions and report to the public, improve volunteers' research learning ability, meet the requirements of volunteers' personal growth and further education, and enhance their sense of social responsibility.

When it comes to voluntary services, admission officers of universities think highly of sincerely caring about society and comprehensive qualities and skills, such as proposers of innovative solutions, leaders of public welfare projects, and the continuity and depth of voluntary services. 62.1% of colleges would like to see applicants show a record report reflecting the whole process of volunteering.
